 Tartaric acid is often used in the preparation of drugs, mordants and tanning agents, and also used as a reagent for the resolution of racemic basic compounds.

It is also a kind of acidizing agent in food additives, which is better than malic acid and lactic acid.

Its several salts have important applications, such as the preparation of Fehling reagent with potassium sodium tartrate in the laboratory, which is used to identify aldehyde functional groups in organic molecular structure.Its potassium sodium salt is also known as Rochelle salt. Its crystal polarizes under pressure and produces a potential difference (piezoelectric effect) on the surface of both ends.

Thus, it can be made into piezoelectric components, which can be used as receivers and pickups for radio and cable broadcasting.Potassium antimony tartrate (commonly known as tartar vomit) is used to treat schistosomiasis.
